Answers

  1. What are KPI versions?

KPI versions allow the Shipping KPI System to maintain, adopt and improve KPI definitions over time. In order to keep the concept simple individual KPI definitions are not versioned, but always the set of all definitions.

  2. Why do we need to maintain different versions?

The KPI Standard and it’s KPI definitions change over time. Indeed, it must change in order to stay relevant by incorporating lessons learned as well adopting to new long-term trends and regulations.

  3. Where can I see the different versions?

The different versions can be best seen and compared under “KPI Standard”. By default, the system will display the current valid version. The current valid version is the version of the last quarter open for data entry. On the left you have the option to select the version you would like to see and you can choose here both past as well as future versions, if such are defined.

  4. Can I choose the version I would like to use?

Not really! As explained above in the “KPI Standard” you can choose the version to look at, but this is mostly for documentary purposes and allows you to get prepared for the next version. But on data entry the system will always use the version valid for the given quarter. This is essential so that all users work with the same version in order to facilitate benchmarking.

  5. Are the different versions compatible?

Sometimes the changes of the KPI definitions are pure clarifications and therefore do not require a new (major) version. Sometimes though the changes are incompatible with previous definitions. In these cases, the different versions are regarded as incompatible, i.e. the performance data gathered cannot be directly compared.

  6. Can I benchmark across versions?

In case two KPI versions are incompatible, then benchmarking between data of these two versions makes no sense. This would be like comparing apples with bananas. In this case the system will not allow to benchmark and give a corresponding message.
