  1. What is the concept of “Ranking criteria”?

“Ranking criteria” or “Ranking Segment” is the default comparative set of ships that a ship is ranked against. Ships participating in the segment with the same ranking criteria, might have one or more common characteristics but that is not mandatory. Companies can define the ranking criteria of ships and/or BUs based on their preferences.

  2. Why is it used?

In order to facilitate comparisons, both business units and ships need to have their own “ranking criteria” specified. As such, the system allows you to specify your “ranking criteria” which follow your own preferences in these two levels:

    1. Business unit
    2. Ship

It could be logical that ships in a specific unit have the same ranking criteria but that’s up to the company decide. The system does not enforce that logic and gives you the flexibility to specify your own criteria.

  3. Who can specify or modify ranking criteria?

By default, the only authorized user to specify and/or update “Ranking criteria” is the account manager. Nevertheless, the account manager has the ability to extend the permissions of a specific role so to enable more users in doing the same action.

  4. How can I specify the ranking criteria of my ships?

Authorized users can specify Ranking criteria of ships in two ways:

    1. From the overview page: when you hover on a BU or ship name on left, a “filtering” icon appears. By clicking that icon, the “Ranking criteria” popup window appears where you can set your own criteria.
    2. From the detail page of a ship: given that you are on My Ships page when you click on a specific ship name you then land on the details of the ship. There you can see the same “filtering” icon next to the ship name on the left. By clicking that icon, the “Ranking criteria” popup window appears where you can set your own criteria.

  5. Can I compare my ship against a segment which is not part of?

In principle, the system allows flexible comparisons which combines multiple ship attributes but also several time periods. It is a requirement though, when you define the ranking criteria of a ship that ship to take part in the “race”. In other words, when defining ranking criteria from my ships page, the system does not allow a ship to rank against a segment that is not part of it.

However, the benchmark page allows even more flexible comparisons such as a “virtual race”. Meaning that, you would be able to compare yourself by doing a hypothetical scenario. For example, “how would have been my ranking if my flag was Cyprus and not Panama?”

  6. Is there a default ranking criteria set?

Yes! The default ranking criteria on ship level is “all ships having the same ship type (see META024) in a rolling year period. On the BU level, the default ranking criteria is all ships having the same ship type with the type of ships inside the Business unit again, in a rolling year period.

Note: new ships created within a business unit do not inherit their ranking criteria from the business unit. Default applies.
