Answers

  1. What are Ratings?

    KPI Rating

It is an expression of the KPI Value on scale between 0 and 100 where a high rating (100) is a result of high/excellent performance.

The Ratings concept offers an "inexperienced" end-user an immediate idea on whether his KPI performance is good or bad.

  2. What is the difference between a value and Ratings?

Values are either directly measured in case of performance indicators or calculated in case of key performance indicators. Examples are:

    • 5 for the PI059 Number of commercial inspections
    • 2 for the PI058 Number of observations during commercial inspections
    • 0.4 for the KPI033 Vetting deficiencies

  3. What was the idea behind Ratings?

When the first attempts were made to create and calculate, it became evident that sort of normalisation of the KPI Values as KPI Value ranges varied from 0-1 to 0-100. To avoid some completely skewing the SPIs, we needed to convert all KPIs into a common value range. What the KPI Expert group came up with was the Rating concept were all KPI Values were converted into a scale between 0 and 100.

  4. How are Ratings calculated?

For calculating KPI ratings, the experts came up with the concept of Minimum Requirement (MinReq – the KPI Value which should result in a KPI Rating of zero) and Target Value (Target – the KPI Value which should result in a KPI Rating of 100). The original MinReqs and Targets were defined by the KPI Expert Group on basis of the combined experience contained within the group, with the vision of revisiting the MinReqs and Targets once a significant amount of statistical data would be available.

Once the KPI value is calculated, above two factors (MinReq and Target) are used in the so called KPI ranking formula which is common for all KPIs. See below:

    KPI Rating

For the SPIs calculation, the KPI standard considers the contributing KPIs (to the SPI) and calculates the average. In case of a KPI Rating that cannot be calculated (wrong PI values for example) then the SPI calculation does not take into account that KPI and simply adjusts the denominator accordingly.

  5. Can I see my old Ratings?

In KPI Standard v4.0, Ratings concept has been replaced by the concept of KPI Rankings (a different way of benchmarking ships). However, you can still see your old KPI ratings on both my ships overview and the ship detail page.

    • On my ships overview page: when you hover on a KPI block, a tootlip appears which contains the Rating information.
    • On the ship detail page: enable “Show Ratings” button located on the top of the page and Ratings will show up on the right side of the page.
