The Shipping KPI System proposes a global shipping industry System for defining, measuring and reporting information on operational performance in order to:
Boost performance improvements internally in companies engaged in the ship operation activities
Provide an efficient communication platform of ship operation performance to internal and external stakeholders.
In collaboration with more than 20 shipping related companies and interest organizations a tool comprising of Shipping Performance Indexes (SPI), Key Performance Indicators (KPI), Performance Indicators (PI) has been developed.
By reading the Shipping KPI book, you will gain a better understanding of how the data are combined and ratings are calculated and how you can get the most out of the Shipping KPI project and the system.
You can learn about the different Performance Indicators, how they are measured and how you can use them to make informed decisions about your fleet and improve the performance of your vessels.
Avoid each company spending resources on developing the same measurement criteria and tools
Ensure focus on the most efficient performance indicators by the shipping industry
Avoid tailor-made reporting to all the different stakeholders both onboard and shore
PIs are the foundation of the KPI project. They are used to calculate all the KPIs and SPIs. By having a solid understanding of the different PIs, how they are measured and their units of measurement, you can ensure that you enter the correct data for your vessels, produce accurate reports and correctly benchmark your fleets against the industry.
Key and Shipping Performance Indicators
The Key Performance and Shipping Performance Indicators (KPI/SPI) are calculated by combining PIs and KPIs respectively. The KPI book provides a list with all KPIs and SPIs along with their formulas, in order for you to have a clear understanding of how each of these indicators is calculated and what does its rating mean.
Vessel data are the heart of the KPI system. With a solid understanding of each PI, users can add data for each of their vessels, allowing them to get vessel reports and benchmark vessels and fleets with the rest of the industry.
Data confidentiality is something that we take very seriously at the Shipping-KPI project. All statistics shown in the system are anonymous at all times and we take every precaution so that no matter how detailed the user chooses to filter the data, they cannot be used to identify a company. Statistical data are only shown if they come from multiple accounts.
The Shipping KPI website provides two ways for the users to enter vessel data:
Enter vessel data manually
Users can manually enter vessel PI data for each vessel.
Bulk import vessel data
By using the handy CSV file importer, you can import all your multiple vessels at a time.
After data are added to the system, users can visualise each vessel's performance in multiple ways, allowing them to clearly see at which areas each vessel is performing well or not.
Users can view an overview of their fleet for a given quarter or a detailed view of each vessel, showing the performance of each vessel down to specific KPIs. By identifying which vessels are performing well, owners and managers can make informed decisions on how they could improve their fleets.
The Shipping-KPI system provides an easy way for users to benchmark and compare their fleets with the rest of the industry or specific subsets. You can view your performance over the last quarters and export charts for offline use.
You can compare your fleets or specific vessels against the whole industry or a subset of the industry that you defined. Compare against fleets based on the vessel type, trading areas, flag, DWT range and more.
You can breakdown benchmark data even further with advanced filters like Class Society, ISM Auditor, ISM Issuer, Country built, Trading Areas and more.
With the easy to use benchmark interface you can drill down on your fleets benchmark data, from whole fleets down to KPIs on individual vessels so that you can easily identify problems.
The trend data view allows you to view a comparison between your fleet or vessels over all quarters and other fleets, either the whole industry or specific fleets using the filters above.
The Shipping-KPI Application Programming Interface allows third party developers to incorporate Shipping-KPI data with their applications.
Integrating your applications with the Shipping-KPI using our API, allows you to add vessel data, view benchmark, breakdown and trend data and in general perform the same tasks as the website from your own applications, allowing developers to use Shipping-KPI data in websites, desktop and mobile applications.
Applications can be used by users for various purposes. Examples include:
Ship managers and owners can upload data and benchmark their fleets against the industry.
Researchers can view data about the shipping industry and the effects of various factors.
Journalists can view general shipping industry data.
Once you become a third party vendor you will gain access to our developers page which contains a lot of information on how to use the API, general principles, list of all API calls and sample API calls.
