Benchmarking features

Published 1 month ago by Charis Ioannou [ Updated 19 July 2017 09:46:19 by Charis Ioannou ]

As most users know benchmarking is the main feature of BIMCO Shipping KPIs However, there are tips and tricks, which can help you use the benchmarking function more efficiently. The most important point is the benchmarking criteria, which are created by your own selections. Please see the example below, which illustrates how to benchmark a container ship with the age range of 0 – 5 years against one with the age range of 10 – 14 years.

  1. From BIMCO Shipping KPIs homepage choose Benchmark
    benchmark_menu_item
  2. On the Benchmarking pages, click the bottom left blue box
    benchmark_select_box
  3. Click 'Add another filter' and choose Age range
    benchmark_criteria_age_range
  4. Select relevant criteria: Time period (All quarters), Which Ships (All Ships), Ship type (Container Ship), Age Range (Below 5 Years). Other fields should be as default.
  5. Click Update Filter to submit selected criteria and update information to the benchmark graph.
  6. Choose the bottom right dark blue box to update criteria for the data, with which you want to compare.
    benchmark_select_box2
  7. Repeat steps 3 to 5 to finish the whole benchmarking criteria selection but this time the Age Range must be 10 – 14 years.
  8. Finally, you will get a graph similar to the picture below:
    benchmark_results

Hints:

  • BIMCO Shipping KPI has an interactive users’ environment, which means you can click on any of the KPIs to obtain  more information.
  • In addition to the benchmarking feature, BIMCO Shipping KPI allows you to generate a report by choosing PDF Report box on the top right of the page. By clicking OK after that, the report will be downloaded automatically to your computer.

KPI profile feature

Published 2 months ago by Chrysovalanto Kousetti [ Updated 19 June 2017 10:44:50 by Chrysovalanto Kousetti ]

A KPI profile is a set of performance indicators (PI) reporting items that are used to calculate and generate the chosen KPIs of a user. The concept of a KPI profile is to provide a customised selection of a ship’s KPI performance, thus reducing the amount of required data entered by users to match their benchmarking preferences.
One of the main benefits of the KPI profile is the individual visual presentation of a ship’s KPI benchmarking performance.

  • KPIs are divided into primary and secondary groups
  • Users can also define the grouping and ordering of the PIs making data entry easier
  • The BIMCO Shipping KPI system PDF benchmarking reports use the KPI profile to show the result of the ship’s or fleet’s performance
  • In addition to primary KPIs, there are also secondary KPIs  which can be customised  to users’ needs
  • User/manager is the only one who has permission to select, change or assign a KPI profile to a Document of Compliance (DOC) holder .

The KPI Profile is an important feature to promote customisation for shipping KPIs. The Expert group plans to upgrade this feature further by adapting it to ship type in the near future.

Monthly random shipping KPI – KPI031

KPI031: Training days per officer

This KPI highlights the company’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing officers’ competence. As promised to all KPI users, Shipping KPI has been developing and changing to maximise benefit to the user. From mid-May, there will be many new initiatives and changes in the user interface, especially for the “My Ships” section.

The changes in the My Ships overview page makes the user interface easier to manage.

As shown in the above picture, the “Add Ship” part has been changed and there are coloured boxes as error indicators for each ship input.

The new password notification mechanism has been changed too, to make it more secure for the users. Now in the notification email, the password is not shown but there is a link for the user to create a new password. In addition, the website now has a cookie policy with a banner at the bottom of the page. The BIMCO Shipping KPI website uses cookies to improve the user’s experience.

Features of My Ships

Published 4 months ago by Petros Moyseos [ Updated 19 April 2017 12:23:56 by Petros Moyseos ]

On behalf of BIMCO Shipping KPI, thank you for your participation in our KPI survey. We appreciate all of your comments and suggestions. The Shipping KPI survey is still available and if you haven’t answered the questionnaire yet, we would really encourage you to particpate so we can make necessary improvements to the Shipping KPI system.

Things you might not know about shipping KPIs - My Ships

Copying information from a previous quarter

In the “My Ships” section, as announced in the January news, there is a new option which allows you to copy ship information from the previous quarter. To access this feature, in “My Ships” choose “Copy from ------(the period depending on the quarter you choose then minus one)” - see demonstrated below- because the “Quarter” is chosen as “2016-Q4” so the “Copy from” box is shown as “Copy from 2016-Q3”.

After choosing the “Copy from” box, there will be a pop-up window to ask whether you agree to copy fleet data from the previous quarter. If there is nothing wrong, click “OK” to proceed otherwise click “Cancel”. After clicking “OK”, there will be a notification line to announce how the copying function is processed.

Exporting report from My Ships

In the My Ships section, besides importing and exporting data, you can also download a PDF report about the ships that you have submitted into the system.

After clicking My Ships, you will enter the My Ships section. Here you select which quarter you want then click Report. When you click the Report box, a pop-up window will appear. You can use this pop-up window to make changes to your report such as which ships, or what type of information you want the report to include. Once you are satisfied with your choices, click OK and then the report PDF file will start to download automatically.

Monthly random shipping KPIs - KPI033: Vetting deficiencies

This KPI expresses the ship manager’s ability to avoid deficiencies and negative observations from vetting inspections. The KPI counts the number of deficiencies (including any substandard act, practice or condition) and negative observations, recorded during vetting inspections. The number of deficiencies and negative observations are then made relative to the total number of vetting inspections. KPI033 is measured in 'Deficiencies/Inspection'.

Shipping KPI Survey

Published 5 months ago by Petros Moyseos [ Updated 20 March 2017 11:56:18 by Petros Moyseos ]

Shipping KPIs receives a lot of support and consideration from the maritime industry. As of today, we nearly count 300 active accounts and therefore, we would like to hear your opinion about the system and what kind of improvements you would like to see in the future.

Can you fill in this short questionnaire for us? The questionnaire takes less than 15 minutes to complete.

It focuses mainly on using shipping KPIs in ship management and your feedback is invaluable. Your answers will be analysed for further improvements to the shipping KPIs.

This survey will also be used for a Master thesis about  the user's perspective on the impact of using shipping KPIs in ship management. Therefore, I am looking forward to your responses as the data needs to be finalised before the end of March 2017.

Thank you for your consideration and support. If there are any queries or issues related to this questionnaire, please do not hesitate contact me on vl@bimco.org  (Ms. Vy Le – Junior assistant Shipping KPI).

Things you might not know

Ship “attributes” are used for filtering during benchmarking and grouping in statistical analysis. Similar to “performance Indicators” all ship attributes are collected per ship per quarter. In total, we now have 23 ship attributes with “META023: Ship Status” as a new addition.

META023: Ship Status” reflects the operational condition of the ship on the final day of the quarter. META023 has three possible ship statuses, including, in service, laid up and broken up. This attribute helps classify whether a ship is ready to carry out its duties during the reporting period. The “Ship attributes” feature is part of the plan to improve on existing features but also add where required. BIMCO Shipping KPI will continue to add new attributes or revised versions in the future. In addition to ship classification, more attributes will be added to filter criteria in the benchmarking feature very soon.

KPI024: Operational deficiencies

This KPI expresses the company’s ability to avoid operational related deficiencies recorded during external inspections and audits.

The KPI counts the number of operational related deficiencies including any sub-standard act, practice or condition (not including HR-, security-, health and safety- and environmental deficiencies) recorded during external inspections and audits. The number of deficiencies is then made relative to the total number of external inspections. KPI024 is measured in 'Deficiencies/Inspection'.

About Shipping KPI

The “My Company” section now has new KPI profile features that are more convenient for users grouping KPIs according to use.

kpi profiles menu item

This new feature can be accessed by choosing “My Company” then “KPI profiles” as seen in screenshot above.

kpi profiles page

You can then select default or create your own KPI Profile. The Shipping-KPI system already has a default or built-in KPI Profile, which can be chosen from the tick box. If you want to customise your own KPI profile, you can select the ”Create New” box then input profile title and select KPIs that you want to include. Furthermore, you can ”Edit” the KPI profile information or reselect KPIs to make adjustments to suit your needs. The ”Duplicate” box is similar to a copy function, so you can duplicate selected KPI profiles. All of these changes have been added to make the process more user friendly.

Things you might not know

The Shipping KPI has 5183 registered ships in total from around the world. And these numbers are increasing as the Shipping KPI gains a new member every month. The variety and number of ships in the pool, means benchmarking and report will be more accurate and useful for users. BIMCO and the Shipping KPI actively support users and we will help you through any issues as much as we can. Please don’t hesitate to contact us: https://www.shipping-kpi.org/about/contact

KPI023: Officers experience rate

This rate expresses the percentile experience of the officers currently onboard the ship based on 12 months of experience at 100%. Each officer, currently onboard, is assigned “experience” points according to a predefined scale. The maximum number of experience points per officer is 4 (equals 12 months sailing time with the same shipmanager). Any experience above 12 months sailing time is disregarded. The KPI023 is measured in 'experience points/officer'. KPI023 depends on: PI040 - number of officer experience points ; PI043 - number of officers onboard.

About Shipping KPI
Performance indicator standards, including definition and examples, have been revised and published in a new format which is more structured and readable. The Shipping KPI website has been updated with new functions in the “My Ships” and “My Company” sections. This function has been tested and officially updated on 9 January and you can now see what was reported in the previous quarter in “My Ship” and the list of ships in the “My Company” section.

More updates currently being implemented and published on the www.shipping-kpi.org will be presented in more detail at a later stage.

The KPI Expert Group had a successful meeting in Copenhagen from 11-12 January, discussing and revising Key performance indicators’ (KPI’s) standards. In addition to working on new KPIs for the future. The Shipping KPI will continuously develop to have a more user-friendly, practical and favourable working interface.

KPI017 - Lost time injury frequency

This KPI expresses the company’s ability to safeguard crew against injuries and fatalities.  The KPI counts the number of lost time injuries (LTI) among the crew per million exposure hours. Exposure hours are 24 hours per day while serving on board. Note that injuries during spare-time on board are also included. LTI is the sum of fatalities, permanent total disabilities, permanent partial disabilities and lost workdays. The term ’crew’ refers to any person being part of the ship’s staff (eg officers, ratings, cadets, superintendents). The same complement is also used as a basis for calculating the total exposure hours.
KPI017 is measured in 'incidents/million hours'.

Rate your fleet in full colour

Published 9 months ago by Charis Ioannou [ Updated 18 November 2016 11:44:43 by Charis Ioannou ]

About Shipping KPI feature

Colouring mean in my ship: You will notice several colours on the “My Ships” page. These are to give you a quick overview of where the given fleet for this quarter stands. If a KPI rating for a ship is 0% then it is marked as red, at 50% rating it assumes yellow and if it's a 100% rating it’s green. Ratings in between have a varied colour.

Rating color legend tool

The above explanation is based on having your base rating set at 50%. Using the colour legend, you can change the rating you consider average for your company. For example, if you want to be aggressive you can set your base rating at 70%. This means that KPI ratings below 70% will be coloured with a variant between red and yellow and anything above 70% will take a variant between green and yellow.

Additional to the above variance we have two more colour indications. Black means that a KPI rating could not be calculated due to missing PI data. If a KPI rating could not be calculated for whatever reason other than missing data, then it is marked grey. For example, with the HR deficiencies KPI (KPI016), if there hasn’t been an external inspection that means that this KPI rating could not be calculated.

Missing data

Monthly random Shipping KPI - KPI026: Port state control deficiency ratio

This KPI expresses the company’s ability to avoid deficiencies issued during port state control inspections. The KPI represents a ratio between the number of reported deficiencies relative to the number of port state control inspections, as such the average number of deficiencies per inspection. By defining the KPI as a ratio, benchmarking is feasible even between ships being subject to an uneven number of port state control Inspections.

KPI026 is measured in 'deficiencies/inspection'.  KPI026 depends on: PI048 number of PSC deficiencies. PI049: number of PSC inspections.

KPI026 table

Recently, BIMCO launched a new website and logo. The new BIMCO logo reflects how important the name BIMCO itself is to members. Along with the ‘lighthouse and beam’ image in the logo which reflects BIMCO’s role in keeping watch for its members and providing guidance and leadership where needed.

In June 2006, the KPI project started and until October 2008, KPIs and ratings were clearly defined. From May 2009, the KPI project went into phase 2 and at the end of 2010, the Shipping KPI Standard was officially released. In 2011, the Shipping KPI system was presented at International Maritime Organization (IMO) for a public launch. From 2012 – 2015, the Shipping KPI grew non-stop with 1000 ships in 2012 to around 4000 ships in 2015. These numbers were amazing because in just 3 years, the number of ships quadrupled. The system was originally developed by a cross-industry group and was supported by InterManager following its launch in 2011. In June 2015, ownership of the system was taken on by BIMCO, the world’s largest international shipping association, and is developed and managed by SOFTImpact.

    KPI007: Contained spills

This KPI helps the company’s ability to avoid spills, not the ability to contain them.

The KPI counts the total number of contained spills, including:

    • contained spills that cover liquid spills including (but not limited to) cargo and bunkers contained on the ship
    • contained spills in secure areas such as engine rooms are not counted, only spills that could have a potential
    • environmental impact if not contained
total number of spills on deck where nothing goes overboard from bulk liquids which could have an environmental impact.

KPI007 is measured in 'Spills'. KPI007 depends on: PI024 - number of contained spills of bulk liquid

5000 ships, expert group meeting and user’s tips

Published 11 months ago by George Michail [ Updated 20 September 2016 10:42:36 by George Michail ]

The BIMCO Shipping KPI now has more than 5000 ships on which to benchmark your fleet! The BIMCO Shipping KPI Expert Group held its 3rd meeting in Copenhagen last week and the main topic was finalising the revision of all the definitions of the 64 PI’s. The expert group further agreed a number of recommendations to be put forward to the BIMCO Shipping KPI steering group for its approval

Sample PDF report – Benchmarking speciality
Benchmarking by bar chart is one of the noticeable features of the shipping KPI. There are various ways to compare data using criteria such as age, class, ship types or even associations. The benchmarking function also creates the data as a PDF, which can be customised. The full report has all KPI descriptions, data and illustrated charts. Therefore, this function can be used to share data or for analysis. Compared to other websites, our shipping KPI benchmarking is user friendly with clear visuals to highlight information.

Things you might not know - download section in shipping-kpi.org
The download section has useful documents for shipping KPI users. You can easily find the user manual, quick sheets, cheat sheet and comprehensive KPI definitions in this section. These files can be download directly to your computer in PDF format. The download section will have new and updated instruction files in the near future to help users get around the KPI system easily.

    KPI018: Lost time sickness frequency
This KPI helps a company to measure crew sickness and fatalities while serving onboard. The KPI counts the cases of crew sickness and any fatality due to sickness over exposure hours – which are 24 hours per day while serving onboard. The term ’crew’ refers to any person being part of the ship’s staff (eg officers, ratings, cadets, superintendents). The same work force is also used as basis for calculating the total exposure hours.

KPI018 is measured in 'sick case/million hours'. KPI018 depends on: PI019 - Number of crew sick for more than 24 hours, PI031 - Number of fatalities due to sickness, PI063 - Total exposure hours.

The Shipping KPI is constantly growing with a steady flow of new users. We are now at the 5000-ship milestone. However, “Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together” - James Cash Penne.  With this in mind, BIMCO is always striving to improve on and expand the information that is available so registered users can make better use of the data available to them and encourage new users to sign up.

BIMCO Shipping KPI monthly news August 2016: helpful tips for using the Shipping KPI

Published 1 year ago by Chrysovalanto Kousetti [ Updated 19 August 2016 10:02:42 by Chrysovalanto Kousetti ]

    a. Registration

Ship managers and shipowners can register for the Shipping KPI by completing the online request form. On the top right corner of shipping-kpi homepage click on “register your company”. You will be prompted to enter your company and personal information. The registration process takes a couple of minutes to complete the 10-11 fields listed for both company and user. All mandatory fields marked with * must be filled in. Upon completing the registration process, you will receive an automatic email confirming the receipt of your request with “Application pending” in the subject box of the email sent from support@shipping-kpi.org

The shipping KPI support team will get back to you quickly with an answer if you meet the guidelines for being part of the BIMCO Shipping KPI.  Non-members will need to supply BIMCO with a ship’s “Document of Compliance” as part of the process. If your request to join is successful, you will receive an email with logging on details for a “provisional” account.

You can then login to shipping KPI by clicking “login” on the top right corner of the home page. You will be prompted to enter your email and password details. Make sure to read and accept the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service. Upon successfully logging in to the site, the information you can view is limited to what your company administrator has given you access to.

    b. Things you might not know

All data entered or uploaded by you into the Shipping KPI System is owned by your company account. The system ensures that any data related to a single ship can only be viewed and accessed by users of the same account, ie. your colleagues.

Security and data protection is an integral part of the Shipping KPI System and BIMCO will continue developing to make it as safe as possible by applying all available upgrades to the software.

    KPI010: Drydocking planning performance

This KPI System expresses the company’s ability to plan a drydocking operation (eg predictable costs, good budgeting and scheduling). Basically it expresses the smallest change as a percentage that could affect any planned costs and time.

To avoid penalties, ship managers striving towards minimising the time and costs at drydock disregard any cost or time deviation between 0 and -10% as going  'according to plan'.

As the KPI expresses deviations both positive and negative, the KPI value is always converted to a positive value. KPI010 is measured in percentage terms.  KPI010 is depending on: PI001 - Actual drydocking costs, PI002 - Actual drydocking duration, PI004 - Agreed drydocking costs, PI005 - Agreed drydocking duration.

    Demystifying BIMCO Shipping KPI

Published 1 year ago by George Michail [ Updated 20 July 2016 11:30:49 by George Michail ]

    A. Quick overview

The Shipping KPI Standard comprises 7 Shipping Performance Indexes (SPIs), 34 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and 64 Performance Indicators (PIs).

SPIs (high level indexes) are calculated from KPIs, and KPIs are calculated from PIs (lowest level).

The seven SPIs are: Environmental Performance, Safety Performance, Security Performance, HR Performance, Technical Performance, Navigational Performance and Operational Performance.

The KPI is built by combining a set of PIs. The KPIs are expressed in two forms: The calculated KPI value and a conversion of the KPI value into a 0-100 KPI rating.

The PI is directly observable or measurable within the company (Eg, number of incidents, fuel consumption, exposure hours etc). In the Shipping KPI model over 64 PIs are currently defined.

Shipping KPI definitions will be continually improved with more specific explanations and examples in the near future.

    B. Things you might not know

The shipping-kpi homepage is very user friendly and you can export and import files for viewing, sharing or editing. The benchmarking function can be visual ie, using graphics and charts.

Rating colour Legend tool – controls how results are visualized.

The Shipping KPI supports many sub users and business units. Registered users can setup as many sub users under the “My Account” function as needed and can give levels of access and rights within the user functions. Besides this, if a company has different departments operating a certain fleet segment or from different offices, the user can create “business units”.

No actual limit exists on the number of users operating at the same time.

    Provisional account
As soon as the company successfully passes the due diligence check ie, the BIMCO member provides their BIMCO registration number and this is approved by BIMCO, then a provisional account is created. Upon registration all new users are given a provisional account and when payment have been received then the provisional account is changed to a permanent account with full access to all functions.

    C. Monthly random shipping KPIs

    KPI001: Ballast water management violations

This KPI expresses the company's ability to adhere to applicable rules and regulations related to management of ballast water. The KP1001 is measured in “violations”, ie, the number of times where prevailing regulations regarding management of ballast water have been violated and recorded by an external party.

KPI001 is depending on PI015 number of ballast water management violations and used by SPI001 Environmental Performance

    KPI001 Value Calculation Example

    • A = Number of ballast water management violations = 0
    • KPI Value Ballast water management violations = A = 0

The Shipping KPI is constantly growing with a steady flow of new users. However, “Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together” - James Cash Penne.  With this in mind, BIMCO is always striving to improve on and expand the information that is available so registered users can make better use of the data available to them and encourage new users to sign up.

BIMCO Shipping KPI Expert Group makes good progress

Published 1 year ago by George Michail [ Updated 18 April 2016 09:20:37 by Charis Ioannou ]

The Expert Group (EG) made good progress on the comprehensive review of all the 64 Performance Indicators (PI) included in the BIMCO Shipping KPI in order to provide clear and easily understandable definitions of the individual PI’s for the users. The final layout and editorials of the revised PI´s are currently being finalized.

The EG, among others, agreed on the following issues:

      • ship’s metadata to include the status of the ships (in service, laid up or broken up, etc.)
      • base all possible PIs on quarterly data, the system should then calculate rolling averages when necessary
      • technical solution to solve the issue of the value “0” versus a blank field in the reporting form
      • minimise the required manual data entries
      • find a solution for PI’s report on fleet level to automatically populate to the ship level
      • arrange transferring fleet reporting from one quarter to the next in one batch, so that the user only needs to make manual entries in case of any changes.

The EG further agreed on a number of recommendations for the BIMCO Shipping KPI Steering Group related to the future operation and use of the system.  The forthcoming BIMCO Steering Group meeting planned for 10 May 2016 in Copenhagen, will consider and decide on the list of recommendations emerging from the EG meeting.

BIMCO, in connection with other engagements in Hamburg earlier this week, visited a number of BIMCO Shipping KPI users. There was a good exchange of information and comments, and BIMCO got a good response and overview of which day to day user interface problems account users can have in connection with working with the shipping-kpi.org.
If you are either a new user or starting to use the BIMCO Shipping KPI again then the following is important to note:

      • select the most interesting KPI’s for your company and report on the associated PI’s
      • select readily available data and information within your company
      • do not necessarily start reporting on all ships and PI’s in one go
      • get the information and data flow structure before expanding the reporting
      • the specified reporting times are in no way mandatory though merely recommendations.

BIMCO Shipping KPI Expert Group meets in Copenhagen

Published 1 year ago by George Michail [ Updated 09 March 2016 09:44:20 by George Michail ]

A comprehensive review of the descriptions of all the 64 Performance Indicators (PI) included in the BIMCO Shipping KPI are about to be finalised at the BIMCO Shipping KPI Expert Group meeting next week in Copenhagen.

The aim of the PI review is to clean up and provide clear and easily understandable definitions of the individual PI’s for the users.

The group will continue to work on the BIMCO Shipping KPI to meet both the owners and future users’ needs and explore potential additions of PIs and KPIs.

We expect that the expert group will agree on a number of recommendations related to the future operation and use of the system, including but not limited to:

      • assessment of data quality and
      • improved data entry processes.

All geared up for the BIMCO Shipping KPI Steering Group that will meet later this year.

The expert group’s short-term goals identified by the BIMCO Shipping KPI expert working group are to:

      1. clean up unused and no longer needed benchmarks from the system
      2. simplify and clarify the definitions of PIs and KPIs
      3. extend benchmarking possibilities
      4. share best practice in using the BIMCO Shipping KPI System

Information available on the BIMCO Shipping KPI website includes the following links; Discover, Measure, Benchmark and Integrate.  All containing valuable information on what’s inside the BIMCO Shipping KPI as well as an overview of the potential reports and graphs that can be generated.

Finally, it is worth noting that there is currently a steady flow of new user registrations on the Shipping KPI website and the corresponding fleet details are also increasing. This improves the data available for performing both all-inclusive or user segmented benchmarking.

      What’s available for users?

Published 1 year ago by George Michail [ Updated 11 January 2016 01:21:11 by Chrysovalanto Kousetti ]

The BIMCO Shipping KPI website contains numerous sources of information. For instance:  on the frontpage before you login, you have access to 4 links with both text guidance and images providing examples on user-ability and possibilities:

      1. Discover! - The Shipping KPI System is a global tool for defining, measuring and reporting information on a ship's operational performance and this link provides an overview of the available key elements of the BIMCO Shipping KPI Standard and system.
      2. Measure! - The Shipping KPI offers users the capability of inserting information about the performance of their ships and getting back a visual representation of how well or not the ship performed over a specific period. Users can maintain their performance data history and later compare this to their most recent or with other anonymous data provided by similar companies.
      3. Benchmark! – Ship’s data are at the heart of the KPI system. With a solid understanding of each Performance Indicator (PI), users can add data for each of their ships, allowing them to get ship reports and benchmark ships and fleets. The Shipping-KPI system provides an easy way for users to benchmark and compare their fleets with the rest of the industry or specific subsets.
      4. Integrate! - The Shipping-KPI Application Programming Interface (API) allows third party developers to incorporate Shipping-KPI data with their applications. Integrating your applications with the Shipping-KPI using our API, gives your own internal applications the ability to submit ship's data automatically as well as using any statistics available on the benchmark page. In short, you can submit ship information as simply as clicking a button, and view your own company system information that really matters to you. You can integrate information from a number of platforms including websites, desktop and mobile applications.

      Direct links:

A major review and update on the BIMCO Shipping KPI website www.shipping-kpi.org has been completed and has resulted in a more user-friendly website. It has a more streamlined registration process for new users, mobile access, and updated information on BIMCO Shipping KPIs for potential new users.

Work on reviewing the definitions of the 64 individual Performance Indicators (PI) is ongoing for the BIMCO Shipping KPI Expert Group, and will carry on into 2016.

The privacy policies and terms of use for the BIMCO Shipping KPI will also be reviewed and updated during the course of 2016 to ensure user anonymity and confidentiality at a high level. However, the system still needs to allow for some control and evaluation of the users’ reported data to ensure an appropriate level of data quality.

More user feedback needed: The BIMCO Shipping KPI team still needs more users to provide feedback data in order to review essential changes and improvements for users.

Shipping KPI member survey suggests best themes for future development

Published 1 year ago by Chrysovalanto Kousetti [ Updated 02 November 2015 02:21:00 by Chrysovalanto Kousetti ]

BIMCO's Shipping KPI team has found some common themes for improvements to the system from the results of the KPI survey that matches feedback from the recent Danish Maritime Fair.

The team met many visitors at their stand at Danish Maritime Days in Copenhagen last month. Everyone who visited the BIMCO stand was able to play around on the Shipping KPI demonstration site that was specifically developed for users.

Visitors were first given a quick introduction of the overall functionalities of the Shipping KPI tool. They were then able to test out some of the key aspects of the benchmarking tools. The demo site enabled visitors to test many of the unique functionalities of the tool – evaluating the many possibilities available for their clients and companies respectively.

Peter Lundahl Rasmussen, from BIMCO’s Shipping KPI team, said:

"It was great to be able to demonstrate the site to so many people in Copenhagen, and we will definitely use the demo site at other events to introduce Shipping KPI to new users."

"When we talked to people using the demo site at our stand, we noticed that their main interests in the system also reflected those revealed from the initial KPI Survey."

"We're now considering how we can increase the number of day-to-day business uses for the KPI System for the companies that use it."

The improvement measures for the Shipping KPI System identified in the user survey results included:

      Is it easy to use?

      75% found it very easy

      Can users find relevant information?

Over 50% of respondents found it very or moderately easy to find information

What’s the main reason for signing up for a KPI account?

63% of respondents signed up for a KPI account because their company had decided to join.

What do people use the results for?

87.5% use the results from the benchmark tools for improving or monitor their ship or fleet performance

50% use the results for internal reporting procedures

      More user feedback needed

The BIMCO Shipping KPI team still needs more users to provide feedback data - in order to review the essential changes and improvements that should be made to the tools and standard for users. Take the KPI Member Survey now.

Upcoming goals of the KPI Expert Group

To recap, the short-term goals of the KPI Expert Group's Terms of Reference (ToR) are:

      • Clean up unused and unnecessary benchmarks from the system
      • Simplify and clarify the definitions of PIs and KPIs
      • Extend possibilities for benchmarking
      • Share best practice in using the BIMCO Shipping KPI System

The Expert Group will establish a plan for the review of existing PIs and KPIs, including clear definitions of each PI, in the current system. The aim is to ensure use of the most correct and concise definitions possible, in order to avoid misunderstandings and minimise any subjective interpretations. Work on this has started and we will provide updates in future newsletters.

The BIMCO Shipping KPI steering group agreed on new improvements to increase its usage capabilities

Published 1 year ago by Chrysovalanto Kousetti [ Updated 02 October 2015 02:04:12 by Chrysovalanto Kousetti ]

The first KPI Steering Group meeting held on 9 September saw the committee pursuing the task of defining the core purpose and value of the BIMCO Shipping KPI System for the shipping industry. The group worked on defining the vision and mission for the system based on the needs and capabilities for users. Their goal was to identify the future of the system– ensuring that it will be an ideal tool for benchmarking within the industry.

Following this meeting, BIMCO’s KPI Expert Group met on 23 September. The committee reviewed the details developed by the KPI Steering Group and went to further define, explore and finalise the next steps for the system.

The Steering Group has a direct reporting line to BIMCO’s Executive Committee and is responsible for the definition of and adherence to the BIMCO Shipping KPI vision and mission as well as the overall BIMCO Shipping KPI business case.

The Expert Group has a direct reporting line to the Steering Group and is responsible for ensuring that the Shipping KPI System is continuously developed to fulfil both current and future needs of registered users.

The short-term goals identified by the BIMCO Shipping KPI Expert Working group are to:

      1. Clean up unused and not needed benchmarks from the system
      2. Simplify and clarify the definitions of PIs and KPIs
      3. Extend possibilities for benchmarking
      4. Share best practices in using the BIMCO Shipping KPI System

It was collectively agreed that a review of all 64 definitions of the current PIs and KPIs was necessary. The aim is to ensure that the most correct and concise definition possible is established and to remove any and all possible misunderstandings and minimise any subjective interpretations of the definitions when using the BIMCO Shipping KPI system.

In addition, the Expert Group will work on identifying missing or unnecessary KPIs. This will be in addition to establishing and implementing a proper data quality control of values by shipowners and anyone who uses the KPI System.

In addition, the Shipping KPI website underwent adjustments in the form of new developments and improved tools for users and potential users.

      • A more user friendly design and interface
      • A more streamlined registration process
      • Implementation of mobile friendly pages

In order to share the Shipping KPI tool with new customers, BIMCO will be present at the Danish Maritime Fair (6-8 October) Users will have the opportunity to test out the Shipping KPI system – by creating a test profile and seeing live the benchmark capabilities available. It will also provide users a first-hand chance to see for themselves how effective and useful the benchmarking tools are for comparing anonymised live data of ships and fleet.

Shipping KPI System - what's in it for owners, operators and managers?

Published 2 years ago by Panagiotis Panagiotou [ Updated 16 September 2015 01:00:32 by Panagiotis Panagiotou ]

BIMCO's Shipping KPI System aims to be an indispensable and trusted tool of performance measurement for all ship owners, operators and managers - without compromising their commercial data.

Key benefits of the Shipping KPI system:

      • it can boost performance of company, fleet and ship
      • it provides an efficient communication platform for ship operational performance
      • it can increase transparency requirements within the shipping world

Angus Frew, Secretary General of BIMCO, said "The shipping KPI system is unique and valuable to our industry - and we will ensure it continues to be run by industry for industry."

To ensure this happens two committees consisting of BIMCO and Shipping KPI members have been created. The groups will be meeting for the first time in September 2015 to discuss areas of developments and continued progression of the system for users.

Continued effort is crucial to improve the system and to make it relevant to the industry's needs. Regular updates by members on their fleet, company and ships will increase the importance of a good performance management system.

This in turn can translate into financial gains for companies by reducing fuel bills, ship and fleet operations. These are just some benefits the industry can gain from using an up to date system. Transparency on issues facing the industry will also drive policy and benchmark.

      Shipping KPI Survey

The ultimate aim for the Shipping KPI system is to be the industry's go-to standard performance system. For a start please help us to complete a short survey on usage and improvement areas. This will help us to identify the key areas of needs and changes to be made on the system.

      Danish Maritime Fair

BIMCO will be present at the Danish maritime fair on 6 to 8 October to showcase the Shipping KPI System. We will be giving away up to 500 free admission tickets. To receive the complimentary ticket please register and when at check out of the shopping cart for entrance ticket to Danish maritime fair please include the code BIMCO.

BIMCO Shipping KPI monthly news - July 2015

Published 2 years ago by Panagiotis Panagiotou

Since BIMCO took ownership of the Shipping KPI System, providing shipowners and managers with an online tool for comparing their ships' efficiency against the performance of the industry as a whole and against sector averages, there has been a steady flow of registrations from new users.

All BIMCO owner members, full members of Intermanager, as well as owners and managers, who are not members of the two organisations, are encouraged to sign up to the BIMCO Shipping KPI System.

BIMCO is providing the Shipping KPI System free of charge to its members (aside from a nominal set-up fee for new users) as well as for full members of Inter-manager. Non-members, who manage, operate or own ships, are subject both to a registration free and an annual subscription.

The Shipping KPI System is currently based on a standard of 64 different performance indicators to allow the most specific and accurate comparison of ships – within each segment and more broadly across the industry.  All the data collected is kept anonymously in order not to compromise any commercially sensitive information.

BIMCO is working on establishing both a Steering group and an Expert group to oversee and ensure that the Shipping KPI system is continuously developed to fulfil both current and future needs of registered users. This will entail not only the redesign of the website: https://www.shipping-kpi.org but also an improvement of the registration process and the identification of new, appropriate KPIs.

BIMCO takes ownership of unique Shipping KPI System

Published 2 years ago by Chrysovalanto Kousetti [ Updated 02 June 2015 05:15:40 by Chrysovalanto Kousetti ]

BIMCO has today announced that it has taken ownership of the unique Shipping KPI System that allows shipowners and managers to compare their ships' efficiency against the performance of the industry and sector averages.

The Shipping KPI System is unique because it is based on a standard of 64 different performance indicators (such as ship unavailability and number of environmental related deficiencies) to allow the most specific and accurate comparison of ships – within each sector and more broadly across the industry – that is currently available. The data collected is anonymised, so it does not compromise commercially sensitive information.

      The KPI Standard covers:

      • health and safety management and performance
      • HR management performance
      • environmental performance
      • navigational safety performance
      • operational performance
      • security performance and
      • technical performance.

BIMCO will take ownership of the system from today and has also announced that the system's ongoing development will take into account the broader needs of shipowners and operators, as well as managers, as part of the continued development of the KPI standard.

BIMCO will provide the Shipping KPI System free of charge to its members (aside from a nominal set-up fee for new users), and will run the tool for the entire industry on a not-for-profit basis, focusing on the value of the tool for the industry.

Angus Frew, Secretary General of BIMCO, said:

"The shipping KPI system is unique and valuable to our industry – and we will ensure it continues to be run by industry for industry."

"We will seek to ensure that it becomes the indispensable and trusted tool of all ship owners, operators and managers, allowing them to benchmark and monitor their company and ship performance to drive improvements– without compromising their commercial data."

Philippe Louis Dreyfus, the new President of BIMCO said of the system:

"Accurate benchmarking requires data – and the participation of many shipping companies is crucial. BIMCO is uniquely placed to make this a success, by having the largest membership of any international shipping association – and the trust and recognition across the industry globally."

Initiated in 2003, the system was developed by a cross-industry group of experts, led by InterManager – the international trade association for the ship management industry - and working with the Norwegian Research Council, consultants Marintek, and maritime IT specialists SOFTImpact and overseen by an independent KPI Association since 2011.

Kuba Szymanski, Secretary General of InterManager and part of the core development team for the system, said:

"The KPI system was born out of a need for an international system to define, measure and report on operational performance in an effort to respond to society's increasing demands."

"I am delighted to see that SOFTImpact is staying with the project and I have full confidence that maintaining this continuity will ensure its continued success."

KPI ASSOCIATION SET TO ENCOMPASS WHOLE MARITIME SECTOR

Published 3 years ago by Chrysovalanto Kousetti

      Announcement by KPI Association:

One independent Association which can collect, collate and correlate industry-specific data on behalf of the whole maritime sector is what the newly restructured KPI Association Limited (KPIA) aims to be.

The KPI Association Limited (KPIA), is a not-for-profit body which now oversees the industry-wide KPI Project, pioneered originally by ship management association InterManager. As it moves to represent the global shipping industry, KPIA is being restructured during 2014 to enable it to better serve the whole maritime sector and to embrace its new vision statement: "to promote safety at sea and to promote best practice in the global shipping industry".

Putting into action its key plans, KPIA is inviting influential industry organisations to join its KPI Trust which feeds in to the Board and is in the process of appointing leading maritime companies to the KPIA Board of Directors. In addition, KPIA’s future has been strengthened by the selection of an independent consultancy company, the Denmark-based ITOLEAD Consulting Group, to develop its global strategies.

In addition, KPIA is aiming to appoint a global network of regional KPIA-certified consultants to form the first point of contact for shipping companies, stakeholders and maritime organisations to help them understand how introducing key performance indicators can benefit their businesses. The certified consultants will also assist companies with the strategic selection and implementation of KPIs and in-house training etc.

Helle Gleie, KPIA Executive Director, explained: "Having a global network of consultants will enable KPIA to better advise the shipping industry in the use of  performance indicators and statistics as well as giving us a vital point of contact to receive feedback and inspiration from the maritime sector."

The network of consultants will also liaise with a KPI Expert Group, made up of representatives from key maritime organisations and companies, who will have the responsibility to develop and adapt KPIs to meet emerging industry needs and expectations. In addition, leading industry academics will work with the project to identify relevant trends and correlations in the data which, alongside feedback from KPI users, will assist in boosting performance efficiency, maritime safety and meeting environmental standards.

These developments aim to help make the introduction of performance monitoring easier for the maritime sector. Helle Gleie said: "Many companies have struggled when deciding if, when or how to implement shipping KPIs, or have not known how to collect and share this information. Our new structure will enable us to assist with this challenge and spread understanding of how to gather this information to secure meaningful, future focused and commercially beneficial results."

The KPI Project provides performance measuring for shipping businesses across a wide range of agreed and clearly defined industry key performance indicators. The Project is accessed by customers through an international web-based system developed and maintained by Cyprus-based IT specialist SOFTimpact: www.shipping-kpi.org

Already the KPI Project is benefiting its subscribers, providing valuable benchmarking information to enhance their business performance and meet international standards and environmental targets. The system securely collates internal data from individual companies while enabling benchmarking against the wider industry. Data is currently being received from more than 2,000 vessels worldwide with more joining each month.

Looking forward, working with independent expert academia, KPIA plans to produce quarterly reports to make specific and relevant information based on its data available to shipping industry segments, as well as a wider industry audience, to enable commercial use of the information, to enhance best practice and to allow a greater and wider understanding of information.

Ms Gleie said: "KPIA is confident that the new structure can and will make a difference to its users and the industry as a whole. Only by working together during times of fast change and by sharing knowledge, the industry can develop responsibly and financially with the desired speed."

Shipping KPI short outage on the 17.7.2013

Published 4 years ago by Chrysovalanto Kousetti [ Updated 18 July 2013 07:21:59 by Chrysovalanto Kousetti ]
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Shipping KPI system website was intermittently inaccessible yesterday, 17.7.2013, with confirmed outages at 15:27 - 16:32 CET and 21:21 - 21:56 CET. We are very sorry for any inconvenience that may have caused. The reason for this outage was due to issues faced by the Shipping KPI's DNS provider, "Network Solutions" (http://www.networksolutions.com/). The DNS provider is important for a website as it helps web browsers know where to find the Shipping KPI website when you try to access it via your browser. This made the Shipping KPI unavailable to you when tried to access it.

The issue Network Solution had was a Distributed Denial Of Service (DDOS) attack, which brought down a lot of their systems all over the world affecting many websites. There should be no concern regarding the Shipping KPI's data due to this attack since a DDOS attack is aimed at making a service unavailable rather than stealing information. From the announcement on the Network Solutions official facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/networksolutions) the issue should now be fixed  and the Shipping KPI should be operating correctly.

Currently the Shipping KPI team is monitoring the situation and looking for options to mitigate this again in the future. Possible options include changing the DNS provider or using a backup DNS provider in case Network Solutions fails again.

We would appreciate it if you could check if the Shipping KPI website is now available from your location and give us your feedback. Please feel free to contact us for any further questions.

      Regards

      A new benchmark

Published 4 years ago by Chrysovalanto Kousetti

One of the most used and important pages of the Shipping KPI website is the Benchmark so we are continually trying to find better ways of presenting the data in the Shipping KPI system. In an effort to provide a more powerful and clear Benchmark page we have redesigned it to allow for better drilldown and bigger charts. There are more improvements underway to make it even more clean and simple to use.

      Main new features:

      • Ability to drill down vertically. Now drilling down happens more consistently by staying on the same page. Clicking to drill down you get the next breakdown below, etc.
      • Ability to get a PI breakdown. Up to now our breakdown wasn't catering for breaking down by PI values. Now this option is available.
      • Ability to breakdown by value (where applicable) instead of just by rating.
      • Ability to benchmark across quarters. This means that you might want to compare performance of your fleet for this and previous quarter which you were not able to do up to now but now have the ability to do so. Furthermore you can select ranges of quarters rather than just single quarters!
      • A more relaxed and spacious view of the charts

We would love to hear your feedback on your thoughts about the new design and ways of improving it.

      Regards

      Your Shipping KPI team

Thanks to all of you and your commitment to the project, including Q1-2012 we have now the data of more than 1000 vessels submitted in the system! We appreciate the hard work of everyone involved in the project to achieve this critical milestone.

In this respect we would also like to quote Captain Kuba Szymanski, one of our directors within the KPI Association: “This is excellent progress for the project and indicates a great deal of industry involvement and support. By collating performance data from a wide range of shipping companies we are able to calculate key performance indicators to enable benchmarking against industry averages. The more information we have the more accurate these indicators are which will help to ensure the standards within our industry are kept high.”

So it's time to look forward and to set new targets. After assessing past progress and potential developments on the horizon, the KPI Project is now aiming to double that number and to include 2,000 vessels in its database by the end of 2012.

This is certainly an ambitious objective. But we are here to help you make that possible and have a few activities/enhancements planned to support this. The next in line is the redeployment of the shipping-kpi.org site based on a completely new platform. This new platform is in development since December 2011 and will be activated for your use beginning of May. In the first step the new platform is focused on improved stability/speed and will look & feel to you initially very much like the current system.  But it also forms the base for several planned enhancements coming the following month, like:

      • improved usability,
      • advance statistics and analysis,
      • WEB API for integration with your backend SW
      • Etc.

Stay tuned and we will keep you posted on this channel  ...

      Regards

      Your Shipping KPI team

      Introduction of graphical benchmarking facility

Published 5 years ago by Markus Schmitz [ Updated 28 November 2011 08:21:00 by Markus Schmitz ]
      Dear user of shipping-kpi.org,

From the very beginning the system was setup to support the comparison of KPIs for bechmarking purposes. The mechanism was flexible enough to support the benchmark of individual vessels or whole fleets against the industry, but was limited in analysis and partially difficult to interpret.

We were working on a graphical benchmarking feature the past month and had enabled a sneak preview to this a week ago, so maybe some of you already saw it. We want to keep the site as simple as possible. So when we received positive user feedback on the new benchmarking, it was therefore decided that this new graphical benchmark will replace the old tabular style completely.

Like the old benchmark the feature is available via the "Benchmark" menu item at the top. The page is also quite interactive. You can:

      • Select the fleets for comparison on the left.
      • Choose the SPI you are interested in by clicking into the chart at the top.
      • Review the definition of that SPI, but also analyse a breakdown and trend at the bottom.
      • Similar you can select any KPI in the bottom chart to view a related drill down.

Have a look and come back to us! Do you like it? Is it easy to use? Do you prefer the old style back?

      Talks to us,

      Markus Schmitz

      Added support for business units

Published 5 years ago by Support SOFTimpact [ Updated 24 September 2011 03:11:23 by Support SOFTimpact ]
Many shipping companies organize themselves into sub-entities and have a variety of names for this:

      • business units (BUs)
      • branches
      • country organizations
      • divisions
      • delivery centers
      • etc.

Today we rolled out a feature, which is intended to support this concept. It is completely optional and you can continue to use the application as before. But if you have a similar structure in your company, then:
      1. The account manager can create BUs under the "My Company" menu
      2. Users can get assigned one or more BUs in their user data
      3. As soon as a company uses BUs, then a user will only have access to vessels within his/her BU
      4. For admin purposes the account manager always has access to all vessels in all BU
      5. A user with more than one BU assigned can choose the BU to look at in the "My Vessels" menu
      6. When a vessel is added or imported, then a BU can be assigned
      7. A user can benchmark vessels against his BU's fleet, his company's fleet or all vessels
Sounds complicated? Don't worry! As said before it is completely optional. You can start without BUs and add BUs later.

And like always in case of questions or need of help, dio not hesitate to contact us.

      New design for benchmarking site

Published 6 years ago by Markus Schmitz [ Updated 21 July 2011 07:33:41 by Markus Schmitz ]
After an intensive week we completed the new design of the site in order to make the usage more appealing. The new design is quite a contrast to the previous look and sports a consistent modern blue theme to be used for all pages.

During testing we already received both positive as well as some critical feedback. We are therefore confident, that we are on the right track, but will continue to enhance the system based on your input.

The site supports all modern browsers, particularly:

      • Microsoft IE, starting from version 6 up to version 9
      • Firefox, Version 3.5 and above
      • Google Chrome, Version 8 and above
      • Safari, Version 5

Providing an interactive site suitable for a wide range of browsers is a challenge and we will need your help here. If you find your favorite browser is missing from the list above then tell us. If you use one of the above browsers, but have problems, then please come back to us. Write us the exact browser version and operating system used and we will try to reproduce the issue and fix it, if technical possible.

KPI repository merged with benchmarking backend

Published 6 years ago by Markus Schmitz [ Updated 21 July 2011 07:20:30 by Markus Schmitz ]
Today we merged the website holding the KPI repository/wiki (ie. the description of the KPI standard) with the back-end system used for collecting and benchmarking KPI data.

We actually had this in mind for while, simply to reduce the work of maintaining two systems. Now rightly so our users were complaining in the past about the responsiveness of the old repository, so it was decided to give this issue priority.

      Our objectives are:

      • A single point of access for all Shipping KPI related information and tools
      • Maintain consistency between the published standard and the definitions used for benchmarking
      • Full technical control to resolve stability and performance issues

In case you have any issues with the new site or suspect any discrepancies between the information of the old repository or the new system, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Migration of the KPI System to the amazon cloud

Published 6 years ago by Markus Schmitz [ Updated 16 August 2013 08:35:48 by Support SOFTimpact ]
As of today a test instance of the KPI System is running on the cloud service provided by Amazon, called EC2 (Eclastic Cloud Computing). Migration proofed straight forward and using EC2 we have now a base to scale the KPI System up to the expected needs of our users.

Additionally EC2 represents a high availability environment with miscellaneous fail over mechanisms.
